The Annual Tender Calendar: When to Find Tenders and How to Plan Your Year.

Many businesses treat procurement as a reactive task, they only look for work when their current contract is ending. However, to truly scale, you must understand the rhythm of the UK public sector. From the “March Madness” spend-up to the quiet of the summer holidays, knowing when to find tenders is just as important as knowing where to look.
 
1. Q4: The “March Madness” Rush (January – March)
In the UK, the public sector fiscal year ends on 31st March.
  • The Trend: Departments often have “use it or lose it” budgets. You will find a spike in smaller, short-term contracts that must be awarded and invoiced before April.
  • Your Strategy: Focus on “Below-Threshold” tenders on Contracts Finder. These move faster and are ideal for filling immediate gaps in your order book.

 

2. Q1: The Strategy & Pipeline Phase (April – June)
As the new financial year begins in April, authorities publish their Annual Procurement Reports and Pipeline Notices.
  • The Trend: This is the best time to find tenders that won’t go live for another 6–12 months. Since 26 May 2026, authorities are required to publish Pipeline Notices for contracts over £2 million.
  • Your Strategy: Use this quarter for “Pre-Market Engagement.” Attend the webinars and “Meet the Buyer” events announced in these notices to help shape the final specification in your favour.

 

3. Q2: The Summer “Framework” Window (July – September)
While the general market slows down during school holidays, large-scale Framework Agreements often hit the portals now.
 
The Trend: Major bodies like the NHS Supply Chain often use this period to prepare for winter pressures.
  • Your Strategy: Dedicate your summer to high-value framework bids. These take longer to write, but once you are on them, you can find tenders (call-offs) with much less competition for the next four years.

 

4. Q3: The Winter Prep & Final Push (October – December)
As the year ends, there is a final surge of activity before the Christmas break.
  • The Trend: Local councils and the NHS focus on “Winter Surge” contracts for social care, transport, and maintenance.
  • Your Strategy: If you are in a service industry, this is the time to find tenders for emergency or seasonal support. Be ready for Clarification Questions to arrive even during the final weeks of December.
