World Mental Health Day 2024

10th October is World Mental Health Day 2024 and it’s important to address a significant issue within our industry: stress. In recruitment, we’re often juggling multiple roles, managing client expectations, and striving to meet targets. It’s no surprise that stress levels can soar!

In the fast-paced world of recruitment, stress can sneak up on anyone! With deadlines looming and targets to meet, it’s vital to keep an eye on our colleagues. Stress not only affects well-being but can also impact team dynamics and overall performance.

Signs to Watch For:

  1. Change in Communication: If your colleague is unusually quiet or, conversely, overly aggressive, it could be a red flag. Stress often manifests in communication styles, so pay attention to these shifts!

  2. Declining Performance: Notice if the quality of work drops or if deadlines are missed more frequently. This might indicate that they’re overwhelmed and need support.

  3. Withdrawal from Team Activities: If a colleague who usually participates in team discussions suddenly pulls away, it’s a sign that they may be feeling stressed or anxious.

  4. Physical Symptoms: Frequent complaints about headaches, fatigue, or other physical ailments can be indicators of stress. Don’t dismiss these signs—check in with your colleague!

  5. Increased Absences: If you notice a pattern of someone taking more sick days or showing up late, it might be worth having a conversation.

  6. Changes in Mood: Look for fluctuations in mood, such as irritability, frustration, or emotional outbursts. Stress can make it harder to manage emotions.

How to Support Them:

  • Check-In: A simple “How are you?” can go a long way. Show that you care and are there to listen without judgment.

  • Encourage Breaks: Remind your colleague to take short breaks to recharge. A little time away can work wonders!

  • Offer Help: If they’re struggling with their workload, offer assistance. Sometimes teamwork can ease the pressure.

  • Promote Resources: Encourage them to utilise company resources like employee assistance programmes or counselling services.

Being aware of these signs can make a significant difference in your colleague’s well-being! Let’s create a supportive environment in the recruitment industry, where we can all thrive without the burden of stress. If you notice a colleague is feeling the heat, take a moment to reach out. You might be the support they need!
