Why You Can’t Find Tenders (And 7 Pro Hacks to Fix It).

Are you tired of hearing about a major contract only after your competitor has won it? Most businesses struggle to find tenders because they rely on generic searches that miss “hidden” opportunities. If your current strategy is just refreshing a single portal, you are missing 70% of the market.

1. Stop Using Generic Keywords
If you only search for “cleaning” or “software,” you’ll get thousands of irrelevant results. To find tenders effectively, use CPV Codes (Common Procurement Vocabulary). These are numerical codes used across Europe and the UK to categorise every possible product or service, ensuring you see every relevant notice regardless of the title.

2. The “Hidden” Pre-Tender Stage
The best way to find tenders is to spot them before they are officially published.
  • Prior Information Notices (PINs): These are “heads-up” notices issued by councils and government bodies up to 12 months in advance.
  • Future Pipeline Reports: Check the Central Digital Platform for upcoming spending plans.

3. Use Niche Regional Portals
National sites like Find a Tender often miss smaller, lucrative local contracts. To dominate your region, you must monitor:
  • Public Contracts Scotland
  • Sell2Wales
  • Contracts Finder (for lower-value English contracts)

4. Reverse-Engineer Your Competitors
Don’t just look for new work; look at who won the old work. Search for Contract Award Notices to see when a competitor’s 3-year contract is expiring. This allows you to “find” a tender months before the incumbent even knows they have to re-bid.

5. Set Up Smart Boolean Alerts
Save time by creating complex search strings. Instead of one keyword, use: “Digital Marketing” AND “NHS” NOT “Recruitment”. This filters out the noise so your daily “Find Tenders” email alert only contains high-probability wins.
